"Come on Grape, you need to relax," said Max.

"I know, I know." A sigh escaped. "It just feels as though something bad has happened. I mean, with how Tarot and King left and how Sabrina followed and then there's Fox. I don't know if you've noticed, but he's been tense the entire night. Something is going on. I just know it."

"Well there's not reason to fret over it. Especially since it's Sabrina we're talking about." A shudder ran through his body. "Trust me, you don't want to see her mad. Scariest thing I have ever seen."

"Even scarier than whatever made you scream like a girl in that haunted house bet?"

A second, more violent shudder occurred. "Much, much, much scarier. She could scare Death I bet. And look." He pointed to the left side of the stage. "There's Sabrina now so no need to worry."

We watched in silence from our little corner as she made eye contact with Fox and shook her head before glancing up at Fido and smiling with the barest hint of a wave. The music was still thumping away and at her re-emergence, it probably meant the last dance was coming up. It was a shame I couldn't dance with Peanut. Ah well, maybe once we get home.

"If you'll excuse me, I have to make an announcement alongside Bino. It has been a pleasure as always." He did a sweeping bow before making his way around the dancers.

Another announcement? Oh right, the results of their random poll thing. I glanced over at the box where the dogs were voting. I hope I'm not on that list. It'll probably be Sabrina or Max or… or… er… some other cat that I know? It'd be weird if Joey was on there.

"Grape!" I turned and saw Joey in his cat suit, making his way towards me. Talk about timing. "How've you been? I looked everywhere for you."

"I was wondering where you were," I said. "And where's Squeak?"

She popped out from under his collar. "Over here as per usual. Not going to enjoy the dancing?"

"I could ask the same to you two."

Joey blushed slightly and smiled shyly, but it was Squeak who replied, "We did dance. Didn't you see that massive open space that occurred about an hour ago? It forced the cats and dogs to dance in close quarters, but we got our dance of the night."

"You forgot, everyone knows that I'm weird so they don't get aggressive," added Joey. "I suppose our little dance just made it official."

I watched as the two of them shared a kiss making me look away. Just the way they looked at each and everything made me feel as though I was intruding on something private. And of course the first place I look is in Peanut's direction causing me to blush as I imagined dancing and kissing him in public like the two love doves beside me. But that will never happen. Not if we want to live a happy, normal life that is. Well… not if we want a normal public life.

I turned back to Joey and Squeak. "So who do you think will win the whole poll thing?"

"I haven't actually voted yet," said Joey. "Not sure which one I should vote for. I mean, I look like a cat, but I'm actually a dog and I didn't want to make any commotion."

"Joey, you made a hole appear in the dance floor and set all the pets on guard duty into high alert overdrive. I doubt you'd cause a commotion through that simple act of voting," said Squeak causing another flush to appear.

"It's too late now anyways, Max is holding some envelopes," I said. Looks like I was right after all.

The music stopped and Max cleared his throat, waiting patiently for all the talking to die down before starting. "I know you're all curious about what the point of the voting is and having collected everyone's votes, we are glad to tell you."

"Before I start," said Bino, "I would just like to say that this is not my idea so don't get any ideas." He gave everyone and glare before continuing, "Due to the recent antagonistic events between felines and canines, this dance is not about Valentine's Day or romance or anything like that. Instead, it is about making up with each other. To this effect, the winners of the pool will have to dance with the other gender… of the other species."

At this the entire room erupted into yells and curses and screams and total chaos. But Bino merely stood there and glared them until they all backed down. Talk about being insane. Then again, Bino is insane in every single definition of the word and then some.

"And the winners are," said Max as a drumroll started.

"Oh cut the drama," snapped Bino, snatching away the envelopes and microphone. "For the canines, the winners are Sasha and Fido. For the cats, they are Sabrina an-"

I didn't hear the rest of his words, my head immediately snapped up to Sabrina before glancing over at Fido. They were looking at each other, a blush on their cheeks as well as nervousness and apprehension. The big question was, would they do it?

I could feel the tension as the winners made their way onto the stage. To touch the other species in a friendly way was frowned upon and now Bino  - Bino of all people! – wanted them to dance? It was social suicide of the highest magnitude. It wasn't just social suicide, it would destroy this building plus a mile radius if it happened. What in the world was he thinking?

And yet somewhere beyond all this cold calculating logic was a small part of me wishing they would do it. That they'd do it and show the world, show everyone else that we were not so different. That we could get along. A fool's dream if there ever was one.

Then out of the blue can a blur, smashing right into the male cat all the while screaming, "I've never danced with a cat before! What's it like? Is it true all cats are great dancers?" and other gibberish that I couldn't quite make out. It was none other than Sasha and with her childish impulsiveness and joy and innocence, the tension seemed to ease. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen or felt. Where things still tense? Of course. But it wasn't the murderous, blind rage from a few moments ago. They were willing to see where this was going.

As our attention drifted back to the stage, Bino gave the mic to Fido and he simply said, "All of you know who I am and you also know I became a police dog to help the community. I'm used to violence and tackling to achieve that and not once did dancing-" Everyone chuckled at the way he said that word. "-cross my mind as a way of achieving that. If this will help in same way or form, I am all for it." He held up his hand to Sabrina and although the doubt and fear lingered, she took it and they descended the stairs together followed by Sasha literally dragging her partner along.

It wasn't the most inspiring of speeches, or even a very well written one, but it got his sentiments across and although the claps were at first slow and unsure, it soon grew to a crescendo that surprised the dancing music and threatened to bring the roof down.

"The pets want to change whether they know it or not." I spun around and saw King standing beside me with a smile on my face. "Something tugs at them and tells them something is off, but they don't know it until they find it."

"Thank you for that, oh Wise One," I said.

He simply chuckled and shook his head. "Snark all you want, but it's the truth. How else do you think Joey and Squeak have survived so long?"

He turned and started making his way out the door, but I stopped him. "Aren't you going to stay?"

"Not really. I have no reason to stay. I had no reason to come to begin with. Unlike you that is."

"Wait, what do you-"

"Grape?" I looked over my shoulder at Peanut who was looking at me nervously. "Will you have the final dance with me?"

"Peanut, I…"

"Do it! Accept!" hissed Joey.

"Joey!" Squeak pinched his ear. "Bad boy!" She looked over at me. "Don't mind us."

I looked over at the dance floor and blinked in surprise. The winners were in the middle of the floor, a perfect circle formed around them as they danced and surrounding them were the other dancers, but for the first time that night, there wasn't a feline and canine side, instead they danced as one mass.

"Peanut, I…"

"Grape, everyone has known about you two since Peanut left," said King. "Everyone has known for a long while. Dancing merely makes it official and clues in the particularly slow witted. I'm not saying everyone will accept it once it's in the open. Merely everyone knows."

I licked my dry lips, glancing at the faces around me then back up at Sabrina and Fido. It's been my dream for so long and the opportunity was finally here. "Peanut… I would be honored."

Both Joey and Squeak squealed in absolute delight and before I had a chance to comprehend what was occurring, they were dragging us onto the dance floor. With Peanut's arms around me, my head leaning oh so gently on his chest, we danced the last dance while those around us watched and some even cheered us on.

There were some sour faces, some people who obviously would not accept us for what we were, but the majority wassupportive and happy for us. And that… that was enough for me. When those final notes were struck and the music began fading, I saw King slip out the door closely followed by Fox. But soon, all thoughts were washed away completely as Peanut kissed me on the lips. In public. To cheers. As I had always dreamed.

Chapter 25

Title: Breaking Free
Fandom:Housepets!
Disclaimer: Houspets belongs to :iconrickgriffin:

I get the feeling this is slightly too anticlimatic and slightly too easy, but I couldn't curb the romantic/happy ending part of me so this is the result.

I realise there is a note of finality to this, but there is at least one more chapter, maybe two. I'll let you know next time.

And as always, critiques would be wonderful.
